Our Mission

We are committed to nurturing lives & fostering personal growth through building boats, community living, seamanship, & service to others.

Our Campus

The Boat Shop sits on 40 acres of land, 18 miles down the Pemaquid Peninsula and just five miles from the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. In addition to the nine buildings on campus, including three shops and two housing units for staff and apprentices, our campus abuts the Crooked Farm Preserve to the northwest. This beautiful 140 acre stretch of land along the Pemaquid River encompasses 2 ½ miles of hiking trails, a canoe launch, and access to Boyd’s Pond.

The Shops

The Boatshop campus boasts three shops! The second floor of the New Shop is where most new boat construction takes place as well as open enrollment woodworking classes that happen throughout the year. The other two floors of this rebuilt timber frame barn consist of a machine room and paint room on the lower level and a library/recreation area on the third level. The Old Shop sits on the second floor of an old chicken barn and is home to the birth site of many Adirondack chairs built by volunteers on campus. The third shop on campus, known as Restoration, is where many used boats come in for some much needed repair and renovation.

Housing

There are two housing units on campus. The Red Farm House is a renovated farm house with two staff apartments on either side of the main building which houses the campus kitchen, a small library/sitting area, and four apprentice dorm rooms. The White Farm House, an old farm house across the street, has dorm rooms for up to six apprentices, a kitchen and sitting area, as well as a staff apartment upstairs.

Round Pond

Just three miles from campus, up the eastern side of the Peninsula, is a small protected cove & the village of Round Pond. This is where the Boat Shop keeps her fleet during the summer months & splashes her newly built skiffs for their maiden row throughout the year. This is also the starting point for island solos & expedition sailing trips.
Our Vision is to create & sustain a robust, engaged community where people can pursue personal growth through boat building, seamanship & service to others. We will strive to strengthen & increase educational opportunities, be accessible to all, & facilitate both technical skill building & human connection.
